Story Walk - Tales from the Shallows
Lace up your hiking boots and head to the Children’s Garden to immerse yourself in the world of Paco the Pacific Treefrog and Nora the Northwestern Salamander. Tales from the Shallows follows two young amphibians as they find their place in the wild, and their way home. Each “page” is printed on large panels along a short, loop trail off the Children’s Garden, taking about 20-30 minutes to complete.
This seasonal, self-guided experience is on display from late spring through early fall.
Due to stairs and uneven terrain, this activity is not stroller-friendly.
Included with regular garden admission for adults (children 12 and under visit free).
The Art of Fuchsia Care with Caroline Zebroski
Join us for an illuminating conversation about how to grow and care for fuchsia plants with one of our region's most experienced fuchsia growers. For more than 30 years, Caroline Zebroski has been a member of the Eastside Fuchsia Society, which is responsible for the fuchsia garden at Bellevue Botanical Garden. In this talk, Caroline will share lessons gained from her experience managing the care of over 130 varieties of fuchsias at Bellevue since 2015. Participants will learn to care for hardy and non-hardy fuchsias, how to start fuchsias from cuttings, proper pinching techniques, effective pest control, preparing potted fuchsias for winter storage, and waking up fuchsias in spring to become beautiful flowers to delight hummingbirds and humans alike. Finally, Caroline will reveal her favorite local places to purchase these inexpensive beauties. Rain or shine. In inclement weather, the talk will move indoors.
Tickets $15. Members $10.
SOLD OUT: Birds of the Pacific Northwest: Guided Walk & Talk with Kevin Burke
This event has SOLD OUT. Thanks for your support!
Join professional birding tour guide Kevin Burke for an introduction to birds of the Pacific Northwest. We will begin our time in the classroom reviewing some common species we may see on the trails at PowellsWood. Participants will learn how to identify key species, and which local species PowellsWood has been helping on their wintering grounds through their work with the Children's Eternal Rainforest in Costa Rica. We will then transition to the beautiful trails of PowellsWood to experience our wonderful avifauna.
Uncommon Hardy Fuchsia & Companion Plants for the Pacific Northwest
Join us for an enchanting evening with Matt Hedlund from Wanderlust Nursery. With Matt as our guide, we'll discover less-common hardy fuchsia species and varieties as well as a few exotic, hardy companion plants that bloom all summer long. Finally, we'll take a look at some wonderful everblooming companion plants that offer those warm reds, yellows, and oranges that we struggle to find with Fuchsia flowers. A 30-minute presentation will be followed by Q&A. A small assortment of rare plants will be available for purchase.
